Blog-A-Long: An Update

I know I haven’t had a Year of Projects post in a few weeks, but rest assured I have been steadily crocheting away.  The amount of time I have to crochet has reduced a bit since I’ve started skating.  Roller derby practises are on Mondays and Wednesdays, which means I’ve had to stop going to my second knitting/crochet group.  Also, the project I’m working on is a lace shawl, so it’s not exactly a quick project.

I am working on the Diamonds Shawl.  It’s a beautiful shawl, and the chart for the first 25 rows is awesome.  However, the written directions—I have never seen so many errors in a pattern.  I am on row 30, and I have found at least ten errors.  I don’t think it’s the designer’s fault—I’ve done several of her patterns, and they’ve all been fine.  I think the breakdown occurred with the tech editor or perhaps the printer.  And the lovely thing is that it seems that there are no published errata.  Rav notes from others who have made the project indicate that there are numerous errors, but it seems no one has let the publisher know.  Once I finish the pattern, I am going to sit down and find all the errors and email them.  I am experienced enough that I can see the error and know what the correct action is, but someone less experienced would probably just chuck the whole thing against the wall.  Hell, I nearly threw it against a wall today when I had to rip back six rows due to some confusing wording.

Project-wise, my next project is probably going to be one that is not on my list.  I mentioned derby above, and today I bought some great sparkly yarn that I think would make great legwarmers.  I think I may do the legwarmers from the Interweave Accessories issue, and I’m going to do the knitted cuff variation.  These will definitely be done concurrently with the shawl.

  1. How do you have the patience to do it?! I love to crochet, until I'm in the middle of a project and all I want to do is rush through and be done. I'm stuck doing infant hats (a noble cause to be sure) for the rest of my life.

  2. I understand about finding errors. My favorite projects to knit are shawls. There have been so many patterns that I thought - wow, did they even test knit this? I also have no problem emailing the designer to let them know that I had problems. Every designer I've chatted with has thanked me.

Awesome sparkly legwarmers for roller derby!!!
